Custom Formulation & Colour Matching

If an off-the-shelf product is close but not right, we build the formulation to your specification — heat, corrosion, adhesion, gloss, drying speed and cost target.

What we can change

A spray paint is a set of trade-offs. Changing one property moves the others, so a custom formulation starts with the property you cannot compromise on and works outward from there.

  • Resin system — acrylic, alkyd, epoxy, polyurethane, silicone high-heat, zinc-rich
  • Solvent balance — drying speed, flow, and compatibility with your application conditions
  • Pigment and effect — solid colour, metallic, chrome effect, glow luminescent
  • Additives — adhesion promoters, anti-sag, UV stabilisers, anti-corrosion compounds
  • Delivery — propellant, pressure, valve type, spray pattern and can format
  • Surface properties — gloss level, hardness, flexibility and recoat window

Performance targets we formulate to

The categories below are where custom work usually lands. The target is agreed in writing in the brief and confirmed by test on the approved sample, so the specification means the same thing to both sides.

  • Heat resistance — silicone high-heat systems for exhausts, manifolds, grills and engines
  • Corrosion protection — zinc-rich and rust-converter systems for steel structures and chassis
  • Adhesion — plastics such as ABS and pre-treated PP or PE, plus aluminium and galvanised steel
  • Gloss — matte, satin and high-gloss ranges to match your existing product line
  • Drying and handling — fast-dry versions for production lines, slower versions for large panels
  • Chemical resistance — for brake fluid, fuel, coolant and workshop solvent exposure

How a development project runs

Development is iterative, and the cost of the iterations is the cost of getting it right. We keep the rounds short and measurable.

  • 1. Brief — substrate, performance target, colour reference, format and expected volume
  • 2. NDA — signed before formulation details are shared in either direction
  • 3. Lab sample — first formulation, tested in our lab and sent to you
  • 4. Your application test — you spray it on the real part and report back
  • 5. Adjustment rounds — adhesion, colour, gloss or drying tuned to your result
  • 6. Approved sample sealed — becomes the production quality reference
  • 7. Scale-up — production run, batch records and retention samples

Colour matching

Send a RAL or Pantone reference, a physical sample, or a part you need to match. We formulate to it, supply a sprayed panel for comparison, and only move to production once the colour is approved under your own lighting conditions — because a colour that matches on our bench can look different in your warehouse.

What we will not do

We will not copy a competitor's product to a price that makes it fail. If the target cost only works with a formulation that will corrode, peel or fade in your market, we will say so, and quote the version that holds up — or decline the project.

Frequently asked questions

How many sample rounds does a custom formulation take?
Straight colour matches usually settle in one or two rounds. Performance-driven projects such as high-heat or plastic-adhesion formulations can take three or more, because each round is tested on the real application before the next adjustment.
Can you match the product we currently buy?
Yes. Send a sample of the current product and tell us which properties you depend on. We analyse it, formulate an equivalent, and send a side-by-side sample so you can compare rather than take our word for it.
Do you keep custom formulations exclusive?
A formulation developed to a buyer's specification is not sold to other customers under the same specification. We sign NDAs before the technical discussion and honour the exclusivity terms agreed in writing.
Is there a minimum for a custom project?
Development and sample work can start small. Production quantities follow the same MOQ structure as the standard range, confirmed once the sample is approved.
How long from approved sample to delivered goods?
Once the formulation and artwork are approved, production is normally about 20 days to goods ready for shipment, at an MOQ of 1,000 cans per SKU per colour. Transit time depends on the destination.
