Why are aerosols stored under their own code instead of as flammable liquids?
Because the failure mode differs. A flammable liquid spills and pools; an aerosol can pressurises, deforms, and can rupture, releasing propellant and product at once. That is why aerosols have their own standard, NFPA 30B, covering manufacture and storage rather than being treated as ordinary flammable liquids.
The code sorts products into levels using the heat of combustion of the contents:
- Level 1: up to 8,600 BTU/lb - Level 2: above 8,600 up to 13,000 BTU/lb - Level 3: above 13,000 BTU/lb
Most solvent-based spray paints are Level 3. Water-based and low-solvent formulas often fall in Level 1. The level decides sprinkler demand, storage height, and how much product an area may hold. Read it from the heat of combustion on the SDS, not from the front label.
What does the storage level actually change in practice?
The higher the level, the more the warehouse has to give you:
- Sprinkler design: higher levels require greater density and tighter control of height and aisle configuration. - Quantity limits by area: thresholds above which an area must be treated as aerosol storage rather than ordinary goods, changing the required protection. - Storage height: palletised, rack, and shelf storage each carry limits, and reducing height is often the cheapest route to compliance. - Separation: keep aerosol storage away from oxidisers, heat sources, and incompatible goods, and do not let idle pallets accumulate in the same footprint. - Occupancy differences: a distribution warehouse and a retail backroom are treated differently, so a layout that works in a store can fail in a third-party warehouse.
In a mixed warehouse the worst case governs: one pallet of Level 3 product can pull the whole area into a stricter design basis.
Which operational rules apply regardless of level?
Seven habits that survive any audit:
1. No smoking, no open flame, no hot work in the storage area, and clear hazard signage. 2. Keep stock out of sunlight and off hot roof decks. Pressure rises with temperature, and a summer trailer is not a storage location. 3. Store upright, on stable pallets, and prefer non-combustible pallets where the design assumes them. 4. Control temperature where practical and monitor the hottest zones seasonally, not once at commissioning. 5. Quarantine damaged cans at once - dented, leaking, or corroded. A leaking can is a flammable gas event, not a paint spill, and disposal follows hazardous waste rules. 6. Rotate first in, first out. Aerosols have a shelf life, and out-of-date stock becomes a disposal problem. 7. Keep ignition sources and battery charging away from the storage footprint; forklift charging stations are a classic audit finding.
What triggers a change in sprinkler protection?
Three changes, all easy to introduce without thinking:
- A new SKU with a higher level. Switching part of the range from water-based to solvent-based raises the level for the whole area. - Higher or denser storage. Adding a rack level or changing from single-row to double-row racking takes the arrangement outside the design basis. - Changed packaging assumptions. Cardboard and shrink wrap are combustibles the design may not have accounted for.
The practical test before signing a lease: ask the operator for the sprinkler design basis in writing, ask what quantity and level it covers, and compare it with your peak stock. Retrofitting protection after the pallets arrive is expensive, and insurers rarely accept a promise to fix it later.
What will an insurer or fire authority ask to see?
A file, not an assurance. Expect requests for:
- SDS for every SKU, showing heat of combustion, storage level, and transport classification. Our aerosol products ship as UN 1950, Class 2.1. - A site plan marking storage locations, maximum quantities, and the sprinkler design basis for each area. - Maximum quantity calculations per area, with the seasonal peak included rather than the average. - Hazmat inventory reporting where thresholds apply, and the code edition adopted in that jurisdiction. - Training records, and a documented procedure for damaged or leaking cans.
Insurers commonly treat NFPA 30B compliance as a condition of cover. The most frequent finding is not a missing sprinkler system but an undeclared quantity increase after a growth year.
What should a distributor confirm before taking stock?
Five checks before the first container lands:
1. The storage level per SKU from the manufacturer, in writing. Private-label formulas must be classified on their own data, not inherited from the reference product. 2. The warehouse's permitted aerosol quantity and level, verified against your peak, not your average. 3. The local code edition and any state or municipal amendments, since adoption varies. 4. The transport documents: UN 1950, Class 2.1, and the packing instructions your freight forwarder will apply. 5. A peak-season plan. Extra pallets get parked wherever space allows, which is how a compliant warehouse becomes non-compliant in November.
One more item for OEM buyers: ask the manufacturer to state the storage level in the product documentation. It costs nothing at the factory and saves an argument with an insurer later.
